Bruce wrote and composed a new musical: Beyond Eden, about a 1957 expedition by a group of anthropologists and archaeologists to a cluster of islands off the coast of BC known as Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands) to remove the last remaining totem poles from the deserted village of Ninstints. Bill Henderson (from the band Chilliwack) co-wrote the songs, John Mann (from Spirit of the West) plays the lead role. The show runs at the Vancouver Playhouse Jan 16 - Feb 6 and at Theatre Calgary Feb 16 - Mar 7, 2010. Listen to the podcast on the right to hear a song from the show, with Bill Henderson singing and playing guitar - Bruce Ruddell on piano.

This short film gives a sense of artist Bill Reid’s life and work, including his influence on North American aboriginal artwork.

In the interview Bruce referred to Bach’s Mass in B Minor as “probably the most incredible piece of music ever written”. This clip provides a short portion of it.

One of Bruce’s favourite Dylan albums is Blonde on Blonde (1966). This clip is of a live recording of a song from that album: Leopard-skin Pill-Box Hat. The band backing him would go on to be known as The Band.

Bruce grew up in Kitimat, BC in the 50s and 60s. And wouldn’t you know it, someone posted home movie footage of that exact town from that exact time. Is there anything that isn’t on youtube?
